WHAT IS TAC?
The Arithmetech Club (TAC) at Benson Primary School is an after-school math program. TAC is designed to fulfill student needs that teachers are unable to meet during the school day on a regular basis. TAC addresses the remedial and gifted learners, using skill practice and technology to reinforce classroom lessons. But that is not all! TAC also introduces and implements higher-order concepts, application and thinking skills.

Hey everyone! Penelope’s back! I’ve got a new gig to share with you all. Okay, so here’s my deal, since the holidays just past, I’ve got some extra cash flow. I’ve been shoveling snow like crazy, and the p’s have hooked me up with some coin from that, so I’m doing okay in the bank department. Soooo, I need your help with my budgeting. So far I’ve saved $55. I’m not sure how to spend it, but most importantly, I must get the new Justin CD. Can he survive without *Nsync? Or, maybe Nick’s?? Life without BSB??? Could be good. Decisions, decisions. What’s a girl to do? I’ll think about that later. Okay, either way, that’s $15.89. My sister is all about this Sponge Bob Squarepants dude, so I’m going to get her a Sponge Bob bag. That’s $7.65. Hmmm. Mom’s got this cool charm bracelet going on. I saw a charm with a little girl that looks like me, so I’m going to get that for her. The charm costs $7.50. Then there’s Dad. Dad is so hard to buy for. He really likes to wash our car. I think I’ll get him some sponges, some soap and that stuff for the tires. That should all be about $7.80. Lastly, I can’t forget Casey, our miniature poodle. Casey loves toys. I’ll get him a new ball! That should be about $3.30. Okay guys, here’s your task, should you choose to accept it: Add up all of my expenses (how much money I’m going to spend). Then, figure out how much I’ll have left after I do all of my shopping. At school we’re doing a service project called Pennies for Patients. It helps sick kids, so I’ll be tossing some change that way. It feels good to help people. Let me know how much I’ll have left after shopping. That way I can decide how much I can toss to Pennies for Patients and then put the rest into my college account. Okay, so send me those digits. Crunch those numbers for me, if you will. J Also, let me know if you do anything at your school (or not in school) to help others. If you don’t, you really should. It’s way fun and makes ya feel really good about life. Okay, TTFN! Winter smooches for ya!! :* Muahhhh!

Please e-mail us when you have figured out this problem. We will only answer you if you explain HOW you got your answer, and include your name, teacher’s name, grade and school.

Pop Tab Explanation
Part of the mission statement of TAC included the thought that the students should be involved in a community-building project. With that in mind, TAC oversees the collection of aluminum can tabs for THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE, a not-for-profit organization that provides housing near medical care facilities for seriously ill children and their families. The collection of tabs is counted, graphed, measured, etc. during TAC.
Grand Total: 1,422,535
The wild anticipation mounted all summer long …

The teaching community could barely contain itself …

And finally the wait is over!

THE ARITHMETECH CLUB
manual is ready for distribution!

This 60-page text contains the step-by-step instructions for starting TAC in your school or community. Suggestions for securing financing and supplies, management, and lesson plans are all included.

How much does it cost? $49.99? $29.99? It would be a steal at $19.99! But, while supplies last, you can have this manual shipped to you AT NO COST! ADC Foundation, the giving arm of ADC “The Broadband Company”, made its production possible through a generous grant. We thank ADC and Mary Katos for sharing their values of spirit and service with us, which, in turn, allows us to share with others.

Get ‘em while their hot by e-mailing your name, school name and address, and the grade level you teach to areuter@ or pmitchell@ today!
TAC this year

The Arithmetech Club is in full swing for its sixth year. With a packed clubhouse, the students have enjoyed enhancing and expanding their studies of fractions, measurement, graphing, as well as the overall enjoyment of math. They have kept careful count of the pop tabs. Participants have created posters, which are posted all around the school reminding everyone to collect tabs. We can’t wait to see how many tabs each school year brings us!

Check out these great math stories at the library this summer. If you find any math related books you think we’d like, please e-mail us and tell us all about them.
