The Franzen Media Center is dedicated to meeting the needs of all students and staff. At Franzen, the Media Center is considered an extension of the regular classroom. Not only do students come to the Media Center to enjoy books, but they are taught important information literacy skills such as using the internet, locating information, and reporting that we incorporate into classroom lessons.

All classes at Franzen have a regularly scheduled library time during which they come to the library to hear a story and to check out books. All students at Franzen can check out up to five books, but must check out at least one. Books are checked out for one week at a time and can be renewed.

Although the Media Center does not charge fines for overdue materials, a student who forgets his or her library books, will be limited to only one book. If a child consistently has overdue books they will not be allowed to check out any books until all overdue books are returned. Overdue notices will be sent home periodically. Students will be charged for lost items.

The book check-out schedule is the same every week, unless it is rescheduled because of holidays or special events. This year’s schedule is as follows:

– Asimor, DiNovo, Maine
– Buske, Cuzzone, Anklam
– Larsen, Evans
– McCarthy, Chiefari
– Hanson, Hanczar, Rosales, Copot

Battle of the Books
Once again in cooperation with the Itasca Library, March 11th and 18th, students will be participating in the Battle of the Books program. The program is designed to encourage students to read and become familiar with a wide variety of books. Our list of books reflects a broad range of themes and reading levels. This is a very worthwhile program in our constant endeavor to encourage good reading habits.

Students are divided into teams of approximately 5 people for competition. Each team member will read approximately 6 books from the selected book list. The teams will be organized at the end of November. On Monday, March 14 all teams will compete in one "Battle", at Franzen School at 7:00 pm. The following Monday, March 21, at 7:00 pm the three top scoring teams will meet again for the championship. Please come join in the fun and watch our teams compete.
